About me

Hi, my name is Mauro.

I’m a local guide with over ten years of experience organizing and leading tours in the Atacama Desert.

Before moving to San Pedro de Atacama in 2015, I worked in an office for an American company — but I felt unfulfilled and like I was wasting my life. Craving a drastic change, I relocated to San Pedro and began guiding for some of the town’s top hotels. Slowly, I fell deeply in love with this place.

My passion for photography inspired me to go independent, and in September 2018, I launched my own private tours and today I run my own agency.

My team and I are passionate about sharing our knowledge of the driest desert on Earth — and we can’t wait to make your visit truly unforgettable.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit San Pedro de Atacama?

Year-round! But the most popular months are from October to April. September to November (mild temps, fewer crowds). Summer (Dec–Feb) is warmer but busier; winter (May–October) is cold at night but great for stargazing.

How do I get to San Pedro de Atacama?

You fly into Calama (CJC), then take a 1.5-hour transfer (shuttle, taxi, or private transfer) to San Pedro. Some come from Salta (Argentina).

Is altitude sickness a problem in San Pedro?

A little — San Pedro sits at 2,400m (7,900 ft), and many tours go higher (up to 4,300m+). Symptoms can include headache, nausea, or fatigue.

Tip: Rest on arrival, drink water, avoid alcohol, and consider coca tea or altitude meds if needed.

What currency do I need? Chilean Pesos or USD?

Chilean Pesos (CLP) are preferred but it is not a must. All hotels, tour operators and restaurants accept credit and debit cards, but small shops, taxis, and markets need cash. ATMs are available in San Pedro.

Is San Pedro expensive?

Yes, compared to other parts of Chile — it’s remote, so prices for food, tours, and lodging are higher. Budget accordingly.

What should I pack?

Layers! Cold mornings, hot days, freezing nights. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, lip balm, reusable water bottle, headlamp, and good walking shoes. Don’t forget your camera — or phone — the views are unreal.

Is it safe to travel solo in San Pedro?

Very safe! It’s a small, tourist-friendly town. Just use common sense — especially at night or in remote areas during tours.

Should I book tours in advance or in town?

For high season (October to April) — book ahead. Otherwise, you can book, regular tours, easily in town (often cheaper but lower standard). Private tours should always be reserved in advance.a
